Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is intended to provide building owners and operators a concise framework for green building design, construction, operations and maintenance.
Since its inception in 1998, the U.S. Green Building Council has grown to encompass more than 7,000 projects in the United States and 30 countries, covering over 1.501 billion square feet (140 km²) of development area.
LEED certified buildings are intended to use resources more efficiently when compared to conventional buildings and often provide healthier work and living environments, contribuing to higher productivity and improved employee health and comfort.
S. DiGiacomo & Son, Inc. has been providing LEED certified construction services for nearly ten years. In 2009, Citibank became the first company in the world with more than 100 LEED certified bank branches. S. DiGiacomo and Son, Inc. was part of making that happen.
“We have been a prime contractor for several Citibank branch rollouts, including the 2009 rollout. We are proud that we could meet and exceed the requirements laid forth by the USGBC, while maintaining a safe work environment and a cost-efficient project delivery system for Citibank.” says Vice President Christopher Cangemi.
The new branches use less energy and water, and include sustainable features, such as:
- Carpet, desks, seating, fabrics and cabinetry made from recycled materials
- Furniture, finishes and construction materials that meet stringent indoor air quality emissions tests
- Low-flow plumbing fixtures, and energy-efficient lighting and office equipment
DiGiacomo has just completed construction of the latest LEED Certified Citibank branch in NYC, with additional LEED projects in contract as they head into a new round of branch expansion and rehabilitation.
“Through our sustainability efforts, we get the double benefit of helping the environment while reducing our corporate expenses,” said Susan Chapman, Citi’s Corporate Real Estate Head for Global Operations. “Our goal is to reduce our greenhouse-gas emissions by 10% from 2005 levels by 2011.”
S. DiGiacomo and Son’s goal is helping Citibank get there.
